Okay moms, truth time: how many of you reach for the box of crackers on the store shelf, or the chocolate covered granola bars in the cupboard as a quick fix for fussy toddlers who need a bit of sustenance or as filler for lunchboxes? We get it!

There seems to be some misconceptions out there about what truly is healthy for our little ones. And the idea of making all of our own snacks from scratch can seem daunting.

Food marketers want you to reach for their pre-packaged goodies so they promote them as wholesome, whole grain even organic. But are they really good for you? Chances are, and we can’t speak for all brands, that no, they just aren’t the best way to nourish a growing body. But making healthy snacks can be really easy (we promise), and half the battle is knowing what a healthy snack is, and coming up with ideas for what to serve. So we’ve done the hard work for you!

Here is a list of healthy snacks that will fuel your active little love-able monster:

- Fresh or frozen blueberries;

- Cut up organic grapes;

- Cut up apple or pear;

- Nuts and seeds for older children (outside of school snacks);

- Banana slices with a dollop of almond butter (or for a nut-free school snack try tahini);

- Plain yogurt mixed with fruit puree or frozen blueberries;

- Rice cakes or crackers (look for brown rice, organic and unsalted) with homemade hummus or sunflower seed butter;

- Dried fruit such as raisins, dates, apples or sulpher-free apricots with cow’s, goat’s or sheep’s milk cheese;

- Smoothies made with banana, blueberry, pear or mango and blended with almond milk and hemp protein powder;

- Flake cereal like organic rice puffs;

- Homemade muffins and granola bars (see the Sprout Right book for recipes or purchase meal cards;

- Cut up veggies with hummus (steamed for little ones just learning to eat);

Keep to a routine when it comes to snacking and meals so that you can help your child’s blood sugar to stay stable, and to be sure they eat at meals too. Snacking is an important part of growing, as small stomachs can’t hold a lot of food and active bodies need the continual nourishment. Take the opportunity to offer wholesome snacks.
