I grew up loving Jeopardy, even before I could answer any of the questions. My grandparents watched Jeopardy every night, without fail, and to me it was a warming tradition of childhood to peek over their shoulders and share in the excitement of shouting out an answer (even the wrong one). My family and I try to find ways to work together and play together, and having a family game night, even one where we watch Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune together, is one such tradition I am trying to build.

My 6-year-old son is just starting to get into games and testing his knowledge. I bought him a quiz book this summer and he has been toting that around everywhere. I think I am prepping him for a love of Jeopardy too!

Whether playing a board game together, or watching a game show on YES TV, the hottest NEW entertainment destination for fall, you can make a game night fun night for your family:

1.     Keep Score

Sometimes we shy away from competition amongst our children; we just want everyone to get along. But a little healthy competition in the form of a game is good for kids. It teaches them how to deal with success and failure, how to play honestly, and a cold hard fact about life – not everyone gets to win all of the time. It also teaches reciprocity and generosity.

Keep score the fun way though … maybe you collect chocolate candies for every right answer you get when you play along with Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune, or when playing cards or a board game.

2.     Make it an Event with Snacks

What kind of fun snacks go along with a game night theme? White bread sandwiches cut in squares with black olives on top to look like dice! A wheel of cheese to mimic the wheel on Wheel of Fortune, pretzel sticks to use as “cash”!

3.     Turn Everything into a Game

Make cleaning up and getting ready for bed, after game night is done, an extension of your competitive spirit. Give your children challenges – brush your teeth while standing on one leg; put away your clothes while singing the happy birthday song as fast as you can, throw your clothes in the hamper as though it were a basketball into a net!
