Parenting, I've discovered, is all about balance.

So we charge toward this sugar-filled, costume-organizing, pumpkin-carving, song-singing Halloween with a balance between what is fun and exciting and what makes me want to drown my sorrows in mini chocolate bars.

Preschoolers can be indecisive. Or at least mine can. So we've gone through many costume choices, and for the first time both my kids realize that their grandma is making them costumes and they have lots of ideas to share about it. But I think we're all happy with the final costume choice: ninjas. Thank you Barenaked Ladies SnackTime CD that was played on all summer road trips.

And then we have the candy. In the stores - every aisle end, every single place they can. And then on the big night, they get so much candy it is completely ridiculous and they don't understand why they can't eat it constantly. Fair question...

So, once again, we approach Halloween seeking balance: wholesome family fun and not too much candy.

At least I can seek balance while I slowly get to eat from the Halloween candy stashes...
