As a kid for almost a year I tried to wear only long sleeves. I wasn’t cold, I was ashamed of my freckles. As a ginger kid growing up in the 80s I was usually one of a kind in my class. A short redhead with tons of freckles. When our class read the 70s classic Freckle Juice, I couldn’t believe anyone would ever actually TRY to have freckles! I daydreamed that one day, my many freckles would look more like a tan.

Thirty years later I still don’t have a tanned complexion, but I do have my famous freckles plus a billion more. I know now I should have been more careful with my skin in the sun as a kid. We did not have the options. We’re lucky today to have so many amazing sunscreens that provide broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Now I am definitely more careful - but I will admit - I HATE the greasy, goopy feeling of sunscreen so much that I skip it way more than I should.

We all know the sun damages our skin. We all know that the more time you spend in the sun the better care you should take of your skin. I spend a lot of time outdoors all year round with my husband and my kids. We ski every weekend all winter and we live on a sailboat in the summer - so I really have become more aware of the damage I’ve done to my skin.

My beauty routine includes foundation with an SPF 15 in it but other than that, unless I’m actually on a beach I’m not great about applying sunscreen anywhere else. And to be honest, the SPF 15 in my foundation is not enough. I was asked by Coppertone®, to try out a new sunscreen designed especially with women’s needs in mind. Women know they should be using sunscreen daily, but many seriously hate the feeling of sunscreen. This product is different! I’ve tried every sunscreen from sprays to natural ones and I haven’t found one I like for me, until today! ClearlySheer® really was made for women like me on the go, who are always outside. It’s easy to apply, easy to use and no goopy feeling!

If you have seen my adventures on social media in the last month, check out @MsMaureenDennis, you’ll know that the timing was perfect. My pasty white skin was going to travel to NYC twice, New Orleans, California, the Gulf Islands and Vancouver in one month. I packed the new Coppertone ClearlySheer line and off I went.

Here’s a few things you should know about sunscreens:

1. What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

UVA rays reach the dermis (inner layer of skin containing sweat glands, nerve ending etc.) and contribute to photo-aging over time

UVB rays reach the epidermis (outer layer of the skin), where sunburn occurs.

2.  Who should use sunscreen?

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, anyone over the age of six months should use a broad spectrum (protects against UVA/UVB) sunscreen daily.  Of course, to be sure any sunscreen product is right for you or your child, always read the label first.

3.  How do sunscreens work?

Sunscreen adds a layer to your skin, helping to block harmful UVs. No sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, but an SPF of 30 lets only about 3% of those rays to hit your skin. (

So we know these things right? Then why did only 51% of the general population (age 18+) use sunscreen products in the last year? (Suncare U&A study, Big Picture Report, October 2015).

I know for me it is all about the feel of it on my skin. Also, many sunscreens make my face breakout which is not something you want to have happen on a girl’s weekend, a romantic getaway, at a conference or at a family wedding. So, me testing out something new during my travels was indeed a big risk. But it was a risk worth taking. I found something that worked for me.

I used the spray, I used the body lotion and I used almost the whole bottle of the face lotion. I think it is safe to say I am in LOVE with the Coppertone® ClearlySheer® products, especially the face sunscreen.  A bottle of the face lotion now lives in my purse and it was brought out so regularly to reapply throughout the day, it became a favourite of my friends and family too.

Here is my Coppertone® ClearlySheer® face lotion sitting in a park at the French Quarter Jazz Festival in New Orleans.

Here is my Coppertone® ClearlySheer® face lotion on the table at a patio bar in in Dana Point California

Here is the big bottle of Coppertone® ClearlySheer® body lotion on the boat with me cruising around the Gulf Islands in BC and checking the crab trap in the photo.

I was so glad I wore my Coppertone® ClearlySheer® face lotion to the wedding in Vancouver, who would have guessed that it would be so hot in MAY in Vancouver   but it was! Look no burn! …my hubby may have used it too!

I even shared it with these lovely ladies as we enjoyed the patio and a glass of bubbly!

I’m seriously in love with this new sunscreen and I know it is now a part of my daily beauty routine just in time for a hot summer on the boat! Check out this Coppertone® ClearlySheer® video my daughters and I are featured in too!

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and enjoy the sunshine, while protecting yourself and staying safe this summer.

To be sure this product is right for you, always read and follow the label.
