As the cold weather hits, so too do the nasty viruses and protecting our little ones becomes top priority. There are many things you can do to reduce the odds your family will fall sick: like the flu shot, good immune-boosting nutrition (say hello again to garlic!) and frequent hand-washing. But sometimes no matter what we do, the house is penetrated with nasty viruses. Just last weeked one of our little ones fell sick and a scary hospital visit was in order. You hope for the chance to control symptoms at home instead.

When your children fall sick, help them to ride it out with these tips for treating the cold and flu with good-old fashioned home lovin'.

1. A Warm Blanket

Sick days are meant for couch-lying. Grab a comfy pillow and a warm blanket and curl up in front of the television. Sleep is of course the best thing, but where sleep isn't possible (why are we the only ones who want to sleep all day!) rest is a good thing. It helps the body to save energy, which can be directed at healing.

2. Something Good to Watch

Boy do we wish the hospital had Netflix, especially when on the 15th repeat of an old Diego episode. Netflix is big at our house, and each child has their own profile for easing browsing of so many different movies and tv shows. This month we have a nice long list of laughter-inducing shows; laughter is, after all the best medicine.

3. Comforting, Nourishing Food

Grandma's chicken soup is a favourite childhood memory; it was a phsyical and emotional cure-all. Sweet Potato Chronicles has updated this tried-and-true recipe for fighting the cold and flu and here is their Faux Pho Chicken Soup. Curl up with a bowl of this immune-boosting, comforting soup.

4. Lots of Love

We know it is hard for us moms, to meet basic self-care!, when our little ones are sick. They can be clingy, needy and never more than a step away from us. This is because they need us there to soothe them emotionally, so their spirit can be strong while they fight through what they may not understand. Love is also a wonderful remedy.

While we hope you make it through the cold months symptom free, we know that the cold and flu hits many of us and no little person is immune. Take good care of your family, and curl up on the couch for these laughs (no sickness is required, they are also good stress-busters!)
