Winter brings not just the cold weather and snow suits, the Holiday Season and hot chocolate. It is a time when wind, colder temperatures and dry heat wreck havoc on our skin. As the temperature drops, so too does the moisture in our skin.

How can you best support your skin so that it remains soft, supple and feeling good now, and all year long? Here are a few of our tips for caring for winter skin.

Find a Great Product, And One Right For You

If you are anything like us (dry skinned folk!) you have tried a lot of products out there. Some promise to make you look younger, others are special for certain types of skin and more promise long-lasting moisture. Going to the skin care aisle can be dizzying with so much to choose from!

This is why we are so excited to tell you about the Beauty Experts at Shoppers Drug Mart. When you aren’t sure what type of product is right for your skin, the Beauty Experts will sit down with you and analyze your skin using the beautyRx tool. These are in-store complimentary skin care consultations and the analysis consists of the Moisture Checker - which measures your skin’s hydration levels - and the Video Microscope - which magnifies your skin’s surface by 30 times (scary!) to help diagnose your skin type. From there, the Beauty Expert can recommend a product that is right for you. Shoppers Drug Mart has a wide selection (and you can earn Shoppers Optimum Points on participating products).

Because Karen has dry, sensitive skin the Aveeno Skin Relief Fragrance-Free Lotion was right for her. Because it contains products gentle on the skin, it doesn’t create tight, sore redness that so many other fragrance-filled products do for her.

Use that Product!

It may seem silly to say, but in order for the product to work you have to use it! And we mean really use it! Apply lotion to the skin immediately after towel-drying from a bath or shower. This will best trap the moisture from the water into your skin. Then keep your lotion on hand to use when needed throughout the day; dry hands may need an application after every wash in the sink. Buy a few containers of your skin lotion so you can keep one right where you need it - in your purse, in your diaper bag, and in each bathroom at home.

Manage Your Washing

If you struggle with tight, cracking hands in the winter months, you know that excessive washing can really irritate your skin. This is the best time of year to get out of washing the dishes, because the immersion in water can create a problem for your skin. Where your partner just doesn’t believe your excuse, invest in a pair of rubber gloves so you can protect your skin when going into water. And always follow-up each wash with an application of hand lotion (like Aveeno).

Be mindful of your use of antibacterial hand gels too. These products designed to zap germs when you are away from a sink can zap the moisture from your hands too. Use these only when necessary.

Overall, take this opportunity to be kind to your skin. Start with your complimentary skin care assessment so you can find the products that are right for you. Visit your Shoppers Drug Mart to check out their assortment of skin care products and earn Shoppers Optimum Points on participating products.
