On May 7th, 2008 Nokia announced the launch of the first Unlicensed Mobile access (UMA)-enabled handsets available in the Canadian market: the Nokia 6086 and Nokia 6301 handsets. Available on the Rogers Home Calling Zone and Fido UNO(tm), the dual-mode handsets will give users seamless access between a cellular and WiFi connection.

How will it work? These new UMA-enabled, dual-mode handsets will communicate via the Rogers Wireless and Fido GSM network or via a WiFi router and then connect to the GSM back-end network via the Internet. Both the Nokia 6086 and Nokia 6301 handsets will function as a wired line when users are at home and automatically switch to the Rogers network and function as a mobile phone when they walk away from their home.

"The Nokia 6086 and Nokia 6301 handsets, together with Rogers Home Calling Zone or Fido UNO(tm), provide consumers with the ultimate in mobility with the added bonus of only having one phone number to give out," said Tejas Rao, Technology Director, Nokia Canada. "The Canadian availability of these UMA-enabled handsets through Rogers Wireless and Fido is another example of delivering quality, value, and the very best technology to consumers."

The Nokia 6086 handset's UMA capabilities, means consumers can take their home phone with them when leaving the house. The device automatically switches from their home WiFi connection to their GSM network without dropping a call - or noticing the switch.

Along with the ability to use both GSM and WiFi networks, the Nokia 6086 phone offers a wide range of features including an integrated camera and video recorder, Bluetooth wireless technology, and a microSD card slot for storing up to 2GB of images, videos, digital music tracks and other mobile content.
